A few days back I came across an article in which the writer, while calling for more movies like Taare Zameen Par instead of masala flicks like Om Shanti Om, felt that it was high time that Indian cinema 'came of age'. Well, having grown up on a generous dose of Suraj Barjatya(I've lost count of how many times they've shown HAHK on TV! ), Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and the likes, I must agree that our movies must have more substance but on the other hand, we mustn't forget that the aam junta still loves the naach-gaana and the song sequence shot in Switzerland ala Yash Chopra(this is nowadays replaced by an item number featuring some exotic beauty)... We always dreamt of being there, hand-in-hand with our loved ones amidst the snow-capped mountains; we always wished that our padosan would be a Saira Banu (or a Priyanka Chopra these days); we dreamt of saving the day by hitting a six in the last ball of the match or rescue a damsel in distress from her evil stepmother - we wanted to be there, do that. And our directors did exactly that... they took the audience where they couldn't afford to go and made the actors do things we wouldn't dare to do in reality(imagine running into a blazing building just to save a little girl's cat!). And it is this larger-than-life portrayal that kept the audience coming back asking for more... While on the other hand we have brilliantly crafted masterpieces like Swades, Yuva, Taare Zameen Par, Parzania, Dor and the likes which have made us contemplate over practical, burning issues and driven home a serious point. While I feel that we should most definitely have more TZPs, I don't think Hindi cinema should give up on the Adiya Chopra, Karan Johar or Farah Khan-esque entertainment. Hindi cinema as a whole must see more matutrity and intellectual growth but our directors mustn't forget that the aam junta wants some entertainment too, documentaries don't fetch you money... When you come back after a stressful day at work and just want to relax and spend the night peacefully, you'd rather prefer an Om Shanti Om or a Mujhse Shaadi Karogi over a Parzania...
